Easy appliqué hens in the graphic happy hens style are stitched either by hand or machine and are surrounded by flying geese blocks and in the centre is the hen house. Unfortunately the Happy Hen fabric is no longer in print but you could use other cheerful fabric instead.
The pattern includes full size appliqué pieces and clear easy-to-understand instructions. On the back of the pattern are two other possible quilt ideas using the same appliqué patterns and blocks.
The Happy Hens story was started by Yvonne Sutherland around 1984. These hand decorated ceramic hens have become a firmly established object of NZ folk-art. As exports increased, Happy Hens won a New Zealand Export Award in 1989 and was a finalist in the American Express New Zealand Tourism Awards (souvenir category). Happy Hens have become a firm Dunedin icon and have been taken all over the world as official gifts by local and national politicians. Their appeal is universal. Interesting fact:
The first hand-painted ceramic happy hens were based on the traditional poultry breeds once kept by our pioneer women. These hens are the Light Sussex breed.
