Pukeko or swamp hen are found near motorways and low lying marshy areas of land.  Their long red/orange legs tread daintily among the reeds.  The pukeko have iridescent blue bodies and white tail feathers that peek out when the tail feathers are twitched. 
The wonderful illustrations on this fabric show the pukeko nesting with their young and feeding among the reeds.  The pukeko are approximately 2-3" (5-8cm) and would make wonderful applique shapes.
