Happy Hens Cuddle Rug
Designed by Mary Metcalf
Cuddle rug size: 1.5m x 1.5m (59” x 59”)
Easy appliqué hens cut from colourful felt in the graphic happy hens style are stitched either by hand or machine onto a wonderful red polar fleece. You don’t need to use felt, any hand-dyed, batik or colourful plain fabric could be used. Unfortunately the Happy Hen fabric that I used on the border is no longer in print but you could use other cheerful fabric instead.
The pattern includes full size appliqué pieces and clear easy-to-understand instructions.
Use the appliqué patterns for lots of other quilt ideas, one has been included on the back of the pattern.
The Happy Hens story was started by Yvonne Sutherland around 1984. These hand decorated ceramic hens have become a firmly established object of NZ folk-art. As exports increased, Happy Hens won a New Zealand Export Award in 1989 and was a finalist in the American Express New Zealand Tourism Awards (souvenir category). Happy Hens have become a firm Dunedin icon and have been taken all over the world as official gifts by local and national politicians. Their appeal is universal. Interesting fact:
Polar fleece is a soft napped insulating synthetic wool fabric made from PET. It was created in 1979 by Malden Mills; it was a new, light and strong pile fabric meant to mimic and in some ways surpass wool. Polar Fleece has some of wool's finest qualities but weighs a fraction of the lightest available woolens. The creators, Malden Mills, named it "Polar Fleece", never suspecting that they were coining an industry-household word.
Polar Fleece is a vegan alternative to wool that is made entirely from recycled plastic bottles and is very light, soft and easy to wash.[
