Matariki wallhanging size: 14½" x 20¾" (37cm x 53cm)
Matariki is the Maori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades star cluster or The Seven Sisters.
Matariki is also the traditional Maori New Year. The Maori new year is marked by the rise of Matariki (Pleiades) and the sighting of the next new moon in June of each year.
This is a wonderful, traditional time to plant new crops, to celebrate the unique place in which we live and give respect to the land we live on.
My Matariki wallhanging also uses koru (unfurling fern fronds) which is another symbol for new life, new beginnings.
The Maori woman or wahine stands proudly in the centre with a pounamu (greenstone) ornament around her neck.
