Rugby Kiwi Quilt

Designed by Mary Metcalf

Quilt size: 1.13m x 1.58m (44½” x 62”)

Roll on Rugby World Cup 2011! I have just the perfect cuddle quilt for your wee (and not so small) rugby fan.

This rugby kiwi fabric was just too good to cut up so I have large 13” squares of the fabric showing kiwis scoring, kicking, holding up the Ranfurly Shield and generally having a wonderful time playing our national sport. The sashing blocks have silver ferns on a black background and the bright green fabric is the grass and as I was thinking of Canterbury at the time I made the quilt, I used red as the alternating strip but you could change this for blue for the Auckland Blues, yellow for the Hurricanes and so on.

I have backed the quilt with a wonderfully cuddly polar fleece, just perfect for wrapping yourself in while cheering on your local team. The polar fleece folds over to the front to form the binding. Easy!

To quilt, I used a fancy feather stitch on my machine which made an interesting edge to the sashing strips and joined the two layers together. No need for extra batting. Whip one up for your sons or grandsons and they’ll think you’re the bee’s knees! Go the All Blacks!

I also have this quilt available as a complete quilt kit – all fabric for the top plus the pattern for $67.30 - all you need to add is the polar fleece. Click here to take you to the quilt kits page.
Interesting fact:
Ever wondered how our national team got its name the “All Blacks”?
Here’s how Winston McCarthy saw it.
In "HAKA! THE ALL BLACKS STORY" McCarthy wrote the following: 'The 1905 team was the first to be dubbed All Blacks'. There are two versions of how the name originated.

The first is that after one of the team's big victories a certain newspaper had intended to have as its headline ALL BACKS; intimating that the forwards were playing like backs; but a typographical error actually gave the headline as ALL BLACKS'.

The other, and the one to which I incline, is that the name originated with the London 'Daily Mail' Rugby writer, J A Buttery, who in a paper-back issued after the tour, 'Why the All Blacks Triumphed’ said that he began referring to the team as All Blacks because of the colour of their uniform. The only colour not black was the Silver Fern on the left breast and the white of their boot laces."
