Images of Aotearoa

Designed by Mary Metcalf

Normally $18.00 for the pattern, now only $10.00.

Quilt size: 1.5m x 1.03m (60” x 40½”)

'Images of Aotearoa' uses fabric of the same name to create a strip of New Zealand images as part of the top and bottom borders, while a simple ‘four patch’ Ohio star is made from blue, yellow, red and green star points. The indigo blue ground is a mottled blue fabric giving extra emphasis to the stars.

The pattern includes detailed sewing instructions plus an original quilting pattern for the blue squares between the stars.

Or if you would like to try some koru quilting patterns in the outside borders check out my Koru Quilting Designs for some original interpretations of koru patterns.

Interesting fact:
Aotearoa: Land of the long white cloud. A name allegedly given to New Zealand by the Maori but not in common usage until after the early settlers arrived. It’s origin is often attributed to Hine-te-aparangi, wife of the Maori navigator Kupe. She is said to have called out “He, ao” (a cloud), on sighting land at the time of the first canoe arriving here from the legendary land of Hawaiiki.
Other suggested meanings of the name subsequently used by Kupe include ‘long white world, ‘long bright world’, and ‘long, lingering daylight’. Aotearoa is now in common usage as a name for our country, New Zealand.
